Study guides
A guide for each document or whole subject, section by section, with sources. Study guides
AI tutor and tools
Connect a cloud provider with your own key, or a model running on your own computer. There's no study-app subscription on top: you pay the provider for what you use, or nothing at all with a local model.
The Tutor
Ask questions in a chat, about anything or about your own sources. Choose up to 16 documents, subjects, decks or study guides for a conversation and the Tutor answers from what they say. When you ask what a source says and it doesn't cover the question, the Tutor tells you.
The Tutor can't move a review date or rate a card for you. Talking a topic through is never counted as a review.
Chats are kept in your library and stay readable even when your AI provider is offline.
AI learning tools
A guide for each document or whole subject, section by section, with sources. Study guides
Drafted cards in several question types, from recall to matching and ordering. Flashcards
Tell it what to focus on, such as a topic, an audience or a question style, and get more cards.
The Tutor, grounded in the documents, decks and guides you pick.
The AI drafts and you decide. Generated cards and guides are ordinary study material you can edit, and the app's own code, not the AI, keeps your schedules and records.
Cloud or local
Add a model in Settings, test the connection, and pick it for each job. ostudy never moves your work from a local model to a cloud one on its own.
Claude, DeepSeek or OpenRouter, which reaches hundreds of models from many companies. Bring your own key and pay the provider directly.
A llama.cpp server with a GGUF model, on this computer or another one on your network. Free to use, and your documents never leave your machines.
Write your own cards, read and annotate, and review offline. Everything except the AI tools still works.
Keys are stored in your system's secure keychain, never in your library, backups or shared decks. Dedicated OpenAI, Gemini and Ollama connections are planned.
What it costs
Many study apps put their AI features behind a monthly subscription. ostudy doesn't charge anything: you pay your AI provider only for the work you ask for, at their own prices.
In our own tests, writing the study guide for a full textbook chapter cost around ten US cents with DeepSeek's low-cost Flash model through OpenRouter. Shorter handouts and slide decks cost under five cents. Prices depend on the model and provider you choose.
